Try picking up a 5 kilo bag of potatoes and imagine this is your head as the weight is quite similar, Our head is quite heavy, and when our head is forward it can be almost 4 bags of potatoes, thats a lot of weight to carry, its tiring just thinking about it, whilst there are more than 20 muscles in the neck to help support this weight, it can be so heavy that the head needs some help from its neighbours, the shoulders.
So often this heavy weight leads to sore, tense and aching shoulders, neck problems, headaches, pins and needles in the hands and even reduces your lung capacity!
This is something I’m hearing and seeing very often due to of love of mobile devices computers and forward head posture, you may have heard me talk about this before.
I can spend an entire session on the upper body focusing on the neck and shoulders, some of the ways I like to do this is
- Working on positioning the scapula ( thats a whole other subject, maybe my next newsletter)
- Remedial Hotstones – the neck and shoulders love hotstones
- Palpation and trigger points
- myofascial cupping
- Stretching
